Oatmeal porridge is a healthy, filling breakfast that anyone can make. We show you the basic method from British cooking, which you can then flavour just the way you like – with fruit, honey, syrup or nuts. It is ready in minutes and keeps children and adults full for hours.
Stir the rolled oats into hot milk or water that has been only very lightly salted and cook for 50–60 seconds, stirring constantly. That is plenty.
Then take the pan off the heat, cover it with a lid and leave to stand for 5 minutes.
Stir the finished porridge and serve, adding fruit or other toppings to taste. You can change the amount of milk depending on how thick you want the porridge.
Tip for flavouring the porridge
You can flavour the porridge with stewed plums or other fruit, honey, maple syrup, coconut, sweet cocoa, melted chocolate and so on. It tastes great with any fruit – fresh or stewed – and with nuts.
Soaking the oats in milk overnight speeds up the morning cooking!
