Yeast-raised bread dumplings are a Czech classic, even though they can look tricky at first glance. With this recipe even beginners can master them – all you need is flour, day-old bread rolls, egg and milk. The result is light, fluffy dumplings that go beautifully with sauces, meat and vegetable dishes.
Cut the bread rolls into cubes.
Add the flour mixed with baking powder and salt, plus about 150 ml of milk with the beaten egg. Mix everything together and work into a soft dough.
If needed, add a little more milk. The amount depends on how much liquid the flour absorbs, but mainly on the bread rolls.
Shape the dough into one large or two smaller dumplings, put them into salted boiling water and cook for 15 to 20 minutes.
Once removed from the water, prick the dumplings immediately with a skewer and cut them into slices with string or a dumpling slicer.
