There is no need to spend a fortune on shop-bought Christmas sweets – you can make your own tree treats at home. Butter, honey, cocoa and a dash of rum come together in a smooth mixture that you simply roll out and cut. Wrap them in pretty paper and hang them on the tree or give them as a gift.
Put the sugar, butter, milk, black coffee, cocoa, honey and vanilla sugar into a saucepan and stir together. Bring the mixture to the boil and cook for exactly 15 minutes, stirring constantly. Then take it off the heat, add a few drops of rum and keep stirring.
Soak a cotton cloth, wring it out and spread it out. Tip the cooked mixture onto it, shape it into an evenly thick layer and after about 10 minutes cut it into sweets.
Dry the Christmas tree sweets on porcelain plates and wrap them in decorative paper.
